5 Steps Closer to your Goal.

These five steps are simple, and very rewarding. Put them into action and you will achieve your goals, guaranteed!

These 5 steps will help you:

  • Unroll the steps to your goal
  • know when are you moving closer to your goal
  • know if you are on the right path

I often listen people saying that they have tried over and over again to reach their goals and when they feel certain that “this time I will make it”, something happens and they go right back to point cero, leaving them with disappointment and with the “final” decision of never trying ever again.

As Einstein said: “Crazy is doing the same things the same way, yet expecting a different outcome”, so I guess there are a lot of craziness going on resulting in sad and frustrated people. Allow me to share with you what I believe will be the steps to end all madness and bring serenity, structure and most importantly, meeting your goal once and for all.

Before we get started, just please keep in mind that it doesn’t matter how many strategies, list, steps, etc. comes your way if you don’t make the serious and conscious decision to get stick to it and really do it!

1. Gain a Clear Picture of What You Want to Achieve:

Many people set a goal because everyone else seems to be going after the same thing. Such an objective usually sounds amazing and just talking about it makes other jealous, but if it’s not the right thing for you, achieving it will not make you any happier, you can’t move towards a goal unless you have a clear idea about what that goal is.

This picture must be specific.  You can’t simply state that you want “a better job”; therefore you must clearly picture what that job will be and why it will be better.  You can’t simply have the goal of “being self-employed”; instead, you need to have a clear picture of what you will be doing and how that will change your life.

Example: I often said I wanted something, my own business but didn’t know exactly what. I only knew I wanted to be independent and that is what I wanted to achieve, the HOW was the big question after.

2. Spend Time Visualizing Your Success

As part of gaining a clear picture about your goal, frequently take time visualizing yourself achieving your goal.  Get as detailed as possible in your mind, even taking the time to write down your goals in significant detail.  Whenever you find yourself getting discouraged go somewhere quiet for a little while and use that time to visualize success in your endeavors.

Example: I use to day dream myself in a car. My night dreams were to vivid, I could actually feel the sensation of being in the car, driving it and I’ve never drown before.

3. Feelings: Associate Immense Pleasure with achieving your goal and Pain with failure

Consider how good you will feel when you succeed.  What will it be like?  How much joy will you have?  How will you celebrate?  Make the level of pleasure as deep and realistic as possible.  The more pleasure you associate with achieving your goal, the easier it will be to get out of your comfort zone and do the things needed to achieve that goal.

Another motivator that will push you towards the goal is the pain you associate with not achieving your goal.  In college, this is the motivator that pushes students to write an essay the day before it is due; the pain of failing has become very real to them.

Ask yourself…

What are the pains associated with not achieving your goals?, How will you feel about yourself? What will you NOT have?, What will it look like to those around you? ,  get these pains clear in your mind and use them to push you towards action.  Be careful here to always use the pain to push you towards action.  Remember these pains are not inevitable and that you know you can achieve your goals.

Example: The feeling of doing something that you like makes you happy, failing to do so makes you sad and as if you were a failure. I take both feelings to push me beyond my own limited believes. You just need to know that you can do anything you set your mind to. The key is always HOW you make it happen and that is what makes you different from others.

4. Set a deadline. Focus

Our mind works much more effectively if it has a deadline. Goals are something you’ve set and other people have nothing to do with it, in other words it’s you who needs to set a deadline too. Do it right away. Give your goal an end day, divide it into milestones. That will also help you track things and decide when to improve your approach.

Break it down

Setting milestones not only helps you to keep track but also gives you a sensation of accomplishment when you can see the results of each steps towards your goal. It also gives you visibility on how well or bad you have implemented your actions and gives you an opportunity to revise and correct if necessary. Each day that goes past without action towards your goal plants you further in your current situation.  Start by identifying the important activities that are needed to be done in order to achieve your goal.

Example: I celebrate each Milestone completed which gives me a great accomplishment feeling and motivates me to continue just to be able to experience that same great feeling again.

5. Keep Your Goal at the Forefront of Your Mind

There are many ways you can keep yourself reminded about your goal.  One idea is creating a storyboard with photos about what you want to achieve.  Creating this board per milestones s much better. Place the poster in a place where I would see it all the time when I was working.  It helped me make the progress I needed to for my goal to come true.  Now, a number of years later I have been in places I’ve always wanted to go.  You may also want to use your calendar system (such as Outlook or Google Calendar) to set reminders. Have the reminders keep you focused on the goal you want to achieve.

Example: I share this one, and I’m doing it right now. I need structure to what I do, if not I’ll be all over the place which can lead me to procrastination and unavoidable into not achieving my goals when I wanted to and not to the full picture of what and how I wanted it to be.

These five steps are simple, and very rewarding.  Put them into action and you will achieve your goals, guaranteed!
